Two men leaving the White House make up this picture: the president's personal physician, Dr. Grayson, and John E. "Jack" Nevin, a newspaper correspondent whom the caption describes as one of the longest-serving reporters on the White House beat. Their names come from the photographer's caption list and were not independently verified, but the pairing shows how closely doctors, officials and the press orbited the presidency in the early 1920s. The National Photo Company made thousands of such glass negatives in Washington, typically of officials and newsworthy figures for newspapers, which is why this small, candid view of two familiar faces survives.
