The record names the house as the Blaine residence at 2000 Massachusetts Avenue NW, the home of James G. Blaine, the Maine politician who served as Secretary of State and ran for president in 1884. The title misspells his name as "Jack Blaise," a transcription error the catalogers flagged with "[i.e., Blaine]." The glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1920, decades after Blaine's death in 1893, so it shows the house as it looked in the years after the family had left. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made it. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating.
