The Sheridan statue in this glass negative is the equestrian monument to Philip Henry Sheridan, the Union cavalry general, which stands in Washington, D.C. The statue shows Sheridan mounted on his horse, a pose meant to recall his famous ride to rally his troops at Cedar Creek in Virginia in 1864. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a firm that documented the capital's monuments, streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, and it was dated to roughly 1918 to 1920 from its batch. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes across the glass, which are signs of deterioration in the original coating.
