Winfield Scott Hancock, the Union general whose troops held the Gettysburg line on the second day of the battle, sits astride his horse in this bronze equestrian monument in the capital. He also ran as the Democratic presidential nominee in 1880 and died in 1886, a few years before the statue was made. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington's streets and monuments in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative sometime between 1918 and 1920. Streaks and blemishes that may appear on the plate likely come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
