Pierce Mill, a gristmill built on Rock Creek in what is now Rock Creek Park in Northwest Washington, is the subject of this glass negative made around 1918 to 1920. The mill dates to the early nineteenth century and was operated for decades by the Pierce family, grinding grain with water power drawn from the creek. By the time this negative was made, the mill was a popular spot for Washington residents seeking shade and a view of the water, and the surrounding parkland was taking shape as a public space. The National Photo Company, which produced a large body of views of the capital and the nation, recorded scenes like this one for sale to visitors and residents alike, so the image offers a snapshot of how the mill was regarded as a landmark of the city's rural past.
