Rock Creek Park, the wooded valley that runs through northwest Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and this negative shows a stream winding past a dirt road in the park. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of glass negatives made by a commercial firm that photographed the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, roughly 1918 to 1920 by the record's estimate. Rock Creek Park was established in 1890 as one of the first large urban parks set aside by the federal government, and its unpaved lanes and creek banks were popular with Washingtonians seeking a rural escape. The glass plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are part of its physical history.
