Jefferson Rock overlooks the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers at Harpers Ferry, in present-day West Virginia, and takes its name from Thomas Jefferson, who wrote in 1785 that the gap there was worth crossing the Atlantic to see. The National Photo Company, which sold views of American towns and scenic sites to travelers in the early 1900s, made this glass negative around 1920. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating, which softens some of the fine detail.
