Harpers Ferry, the river town where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in West Virginia, is the subject here, and its title refers to a "Herald Tour" that the record does not explain. The town is best known for John Brown's 1859 raid on the federal arsenal, and it changed hands repeatedly during the Civil War, which later drew many visitors to its historic sites. The view comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that produced scenic views and postcards in the early twentieth century. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noting when studying the negative.
