This glass negative records Ira Nelson Morris, who served as United States minister to Sweden during the First World War and the years immediately after it. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented officials and public life in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on glass, a format that captured sharp detail but aged poorly. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are visible signs of the negative's age rather than features of the sitter himself.
