Few film couples of the early 1920s were as famous as Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, who appear in this glass negative from the National Photo Company. The two had married in 1920 and were widely called "America's sweethearts." Fairbanks and Pickford had also helped found United Artists in 1919, a studio created so that performers could control their own films. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., recorded many visiting public figures, and this plate shows the streaks and blemishes that can appear as glass negative coatings age.
