Buckwheat fields in Fairbanks are an unexpected sight in a photograph from the Interior of Alaska, where short growing seasons and cold soils made farming a difficult proposition. Fairbanks was founded during the gold rush at the turn of the 20th century, and by the late 1910s territorial agriculture experiments were testing hardy grains and vegetables that could mature before frost. Buckwheat, a fast-growing crop often used for feed and flour, suited that effort. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose glass negatives document the country in the years after World War I, and its faint streaks and blemishes are typical of aging glass plates from that period.
