The title "Howard Fisk" comes from information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress notes it has not been verified, so the subject's identity remains open. The picture survives as a glass negative of 4 by 5 inches or smaller, dated to about 1918 to 1920, when the Washington, D.C., firm was producing large numbers of plates. Streaks and blemishes across the surface come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings, a common sign of age that also shows how fragile these supports were. Herbert A. French donated the negative to the Library in 1947.
