Jim Shaw, the Washington Senators pitcher, is the subject of this 1919 glass negative, one of the many portraits the National Photo Company made of players of that era. Shaw (1893 to 1962) pitched for the Senators in the years around the First World War, a period when the club was one of the American League's steadier franchises and baseball drew large crowds to ballparks in the nation's capital. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, produced thousands of such images for newspapers and public use. The glass plate has visible streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is part of what gives the negative its age.
