Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet in northeastern West Virginia, was a crossroads of commerce and conflict long before this view was made. Its federal armory and John Brown's 1859 raid drew national attention, and the town changed hands several times during the Civil War. The National Photo Company produced many scenes like this one for travelers and postcard buyers in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coatings, so the negative shows its age as well as its subject.
