This glass negative appears to document a committee gathering on April 3, 1924, the Advisory Committee on Coordination of Rail and Water Transportation, though that title comes from information written on the negative's sleeve and has not been independently verified. In the early 1920s, federal officials and transportation interests were working out how railroads and waterways could operate together, a question the Transportation Act of 1920 brought to the forefront. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded government figures and events of that period, made the image. Look for streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
