Standing just west of the White House, the granite building in this view once held the State, War and Navy departments under one roof. Completed in 1888 to designs by Alfred B. Mullett, its French Second Empire style, with a mansard roof and dense ornament, drew both praise and ridicule from critics of the day. The National Photo Company recorded it on glass negative around 1918 to 1920, and the building now carries the name of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Faint streaks and blemishes on the negative are typical of glass plates from this period.
