Jim White, billed in the title as the champion strong man of the Navy, is the subject of this glass negative dated October 6, 1921. It came from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced a large body of portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century. Feats of strength were popular public entertainments in that period, and servicemen who showed exceptional physical prowess often drew press attention. The record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, which are worth keeping in mind when judging the image's tonal detail.
