Two men in formal dress stand for the camera: Lord Robert Cecil, the British statesman and a leading champion of the League of Nations, and Henry White, the American diplomat who had taken part in the Paris Peace Conference after the First World War. Their meeting reflects the informal contacts that shaped postwar diplomacy, since the United States, a major power, never joined the League. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose press photographs were widely circulated to newspapers. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual deterioration of its original coating, which is part of the negative's history.
