Here the subject is Henry Ford, photographed on September 6, 1923, and the record gives that date in the title itself, which is useful because the National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., and made a large body of glass-plate negatives of public figures and events in the early twentieth century. Ford, the automaker whose Model T had reshaped American manufacturing and daily life, was a frequent subject of press photography in those years. The negative is a small glass plate, and its record notes streaking and other blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in plates of this age.
