This glass negative records a portrait of Henry C. Wallace, dated March 15, 1921, a few weeks after he took office as Secretary of Agriculture under President Warren G. Harding. Wallace, a longtime Iowa newspaper editor, led the department through the postwar farm slump, when falling crop prices hit rural America hard. The National Photo Company made the negative, and its date and title come from notes on the glass or its sleeve, which have not been independently verified. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion over time.
