This glass negative records a bronze statue presented to Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy from 1913 to 1921, by the French ambassador, Jean Jules Jusserand, in October 1919. Diplomatic gifts like this one were part of the warm exchanges between the United States and France in the months after the First World War. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, documented official ceremonies and public figures in the capital during this period. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
