Four men appear together in this National Photo Company glass negative, the senior figures of the War Department in the years just after the First World War. Benedict Crowell, Assistant Secretary of War, stands with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and General Peyton C. March, the Army's Chief of Staff, along with an unnamed lieutenant colonel. The studio's large-format plates from this period recorded Washington officials and officers for official and press use. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing when judging the image's clarity.
