Lt. Col. Clarence O. Sherrill appears in this 1921 portrait, which the National Photo Company recorded on a glass negative dated March 23 of that year. Sherrill was a Army officer who later served as city manager of Cincinnati, a career that makes this formal studio-style image a useful glimpse of a military man early in his career. The National Photo Company, active in Washington from about 1906 to 1932, produced thousands of such portraits and views of officials and public life. Notice the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coating.
