A glass negative dated February 22, 1922, preserves a portrait of Clarence Caldwell Sherrell, though the name and date come from studio notes that have not been independently verified. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, produced many such plates, and the 4 by 5 inch format was a common choice for portrait and documentary work of the period. The light-sensitive coatings on glass plates often deteriorate, and the streaks and blemishes visible here are typical of that aging. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
