The title names two people, Slemp and Sherrell, taken from the negative sleeve, though that identification has not been verified, so the sitters remain uncertain. The plate dates to about 1923 and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that photographed officials, events and everyday city life in the early twentieth century. Glass negatives like this one were hand-coated, and many have aged with streaks and blemishes as their original coatings deteriorated, marks that are visible on this example. Those flaws are worth noticing, since they record how the plate has changed over decades of storage.
