The title on this glass negative, Slemp & Sherrell, names two people or a firm, though the National Photo Company's label for it was never verified, so the subject remains an open question. The negative is dated to about 1923, when the company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active from the early twentieth century through the 1930s, was documenting the capital's officials, buildings and street life. Look closely and you will see streaks and small blemishes, the result of the glass coating's natural deterioration over the decades since it was made.
