Pictured at the Congressional Club in Washington is Slemp, identified in the title as C. Bascom Slemp, a Virginia Republican who served in the House before becoming secretary to President Coolidge. The image is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, society, and daily life in the capital in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified notes on the negative sleeve, and the 1923 date is inferred from neighboring negatives, so both are best treated as provisional. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating.
