Set at the Congressional Club in Washington, a social club for members of Congress, this view shows a more informal side of political life than the floor of the House. The title names C. Bascom Slemp, a Republican congressman from southwestern Virginia who was an influential party strategist in the 1910s and early 1920s and later served as secretary to President Calvin Coolidge. The 1923 date is inferred from other negatives in the same group, so it is approximate. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
