The title pairs Calvin Coolidge with Virginia Republican C. Bascom Slemp, and the record dates the scene to about 1924. Slemp, a congressman from southwestern Virginia, served as secretary to the president in the early Coolidge years, after Warren Harding's death in 1923 brought Coolidge to the presidency. The negative came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, visitors and public events in the capital in the early twentieth century. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, so the image may look hazy in places.
