The glass negative records a portrait of a Colonel Sherrell posed with his children, dated February 22, 1923, a date that fell on Washington's Birthday. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many such portraits of officials, families, and public figures, and this collection reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The identification and date come from caption data written on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. Visible streaks and blemishes are natural deterioration in the original glass coating.
