The title names the children of Nathaniel Dial, though the National Photo Company's label for this image has not been independently verified. The negative is dated May 27, 1922, a date taken from a related negative in the same series. The company worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, making portraits and views of everyday city life that were often sold to the public as prints. This glass plate reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947, and it shows streaks and other blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
