The title "Chester children" names the subject of this glass negative, though the Library of Congress notes that the label, written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve, has not been verified. The company was a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and its negatives came to the Library as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The plate is dated to about 1920 based on negatives in the same range. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, so they are worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
