Shown here is Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane at the Industrial Conference in Washington, D.C., on October 6, 1919. The conference was convened in the aftermath of a wave of postwar strikes, and it brought together representatives of labor, management, and the public to seek common ground on wages, bargaining rights, and industrial peace. Its deadlock over those questions shaped the labor debates of the following years. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection, a gift donated in 1947, and faint streaks and blemishes from the aging of its original coating are visible.
