This glass negative shows Elbert H. Gary, the chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, whom many knew as "Judge" Gary from his earlier service on the bench in Illinois. It was made in Washington, D.C., on October 6, 1919, the opening day of the Industrial Conference that President Woodrow Wilson had called to address the wave of postwar labor strikes. The talks soon stalled over union recognition, a central issue in the steel industry's labor fight that autumn. Streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating are visible on the plate, a common sign of age in negatives of this period.
