John D. Rockefeller Jr., head of the Standard Oil family and a prominent business voice of the day, appears in this October 7, 1919 view taken as he attended an industrial conference in Washington, D.C. The gathering came in the months after the First World War, when strikes and labor unrest were spreading through American industry and the federal government sought a forum where employers and workers could meet. The conference ended without agreement on the central question of collective bargaining, which reflected the sharp divide between management and labor at the time. The glass negative, made by the National Photo Company, shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, a physical trace of its age.
