A portrait of Judge A.A. Hoehling, dated to about 1921, survives here as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that recorded public officials, civic events, and everyday city life for several decades. The negative was donated to the Library of Congress in 1947, which preserved the company's large body of work from that era. Because the glass coating has naturally deteriorated, the image shows streaks and blemishes that come from the object's age rather than from the sitter. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified.
