Judge Theo. Brentano appears here as a portrait on a glass negative, a format that recorded fine detail on a small plate. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made many such negatives of public figures and everyday scenes. The record dates this one to about 1922, based on neighboring negatives, and the name on the sleeve has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coating, so some marks are a feature of the glass itself rather than of the scene.
