This glass negative records a Confederate monument in King George, a small Virginia county on the Northern Neck, as it appeared around 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed American streets, buildings and public life in the early twentieth century, made the image. Monuments like this one went up across the South in the decades after Reconstruction, often through local Confederate memorial groups, and they shaped how many communities remembered the war. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, so some fine detail is softened.
