Five men stand together in this image, identified by surname in the title as Senator Fernald, Hale, Keyes, Moses, and Nicholson, with the group pictured around 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of officials and public figures, and this picture belongs to that body of work. It survives as a glass negative, and the record notes that streaks and other blemishes come from deterioration in the original coating. Those marks are worth noticing, since they show the physical age of the plate as well as the moment it recorded.
