Newton D. Baker, the Secretary of War, and Peyton C. March, the Army's Chief of Staff, are the two men named in this view of a review of the entire American Detachment, which is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from the many other wartime parade pictures in the gallery. The record dates it only to roughly 1918 through 1920, so it likely falls in the years when American forces were returning from Europe after the First World War. Reviews like this one let senior officials publicly honor troops and the officers who led them. The National Photo Company, a Washington-based commercial studio, made many such images of officials and military ceremonies, and the surviving glass plates are a useful record of that period.
