Officers serving as military attachés, the foreign-posted observers who reported on other nations' armies, stand together at a review of the American Detachment, captured here on a glass negative dated to roughly 1918 to 1920. That span covers the close of the First World War and the months after the armistice, when American forces abroad and the diplomats who tracked them were especially active. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, produced and preserved this kind of documentation of official life. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the slow breakdown of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
