Captain Christiansen, whose first name is recorded as "Asage [?]" and is uncertain, is the subject of this October 1919 glass negative, though the title comes from unverified notes that the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The company worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, photographing officials, officers, and public events, and its plates are a valuable record of that period. The autumn of 1919 followed the end of World War I by about a year, when many military men were still being photographed in uniform. The negative's record also warns of streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which may affect how the image appears.
