A streetcar wreck near Walter Reed, the Army hospital on the northwest edge of Washington, is the event recorded here, dated October 13, 1919, though the title comes from unverified notes made by the National Photo Company. After World War I, electric streetcars carried much of the city's traffic, and collisions drew crowds and press photographers alike. The company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's news and street life, left a large body of glass negatives like this one. Faint streaks and blemishes on the negative come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
