The wreck at Walter Reed, photographed on October 13, 1919, shows a streetcar accident at the Army medical center that carries the name of the physician who studied yellow fever. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington street life and local events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image on a glass negative. Streetcar collisions and derailments were a common hazard as electric lines spread across the city, and the photograph preserves the damage as it stood. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
