Stewart's Castle, the stone mansion on Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and it stands apart from the many city views on this board by being a private residence built as a showpiece. The house was designed by Adolph Cluss, a German-born architect best known for his Washington schools and public buildings, and it was built for William Morris Stewart, a Nevada senator whose mining fortune paid for an unusually fanciful home. The National Photo Company made this glass negative sometime between 1918 and 1920, when the building was a well-known landmark on the circle. Look for the streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from deterioration of its original coating.
