Cannons and memorial monuments are the main subjects of this view of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a town that by the late 1910s was among the country's best-known destinations because of its battlefield. The Gettysburg National Military Park, established in 1895, preserved the ground of the July 1863 battle and filled it with artillery and monuments placed by states, regiments and veterans' groups. The National Photo Company, which produced views of such sites for tourists and publishers, recorded them on glass negatives. This plate shows the streaks and blemishes that come with the natural aging of its coating.
