The record identifies the sitter as John Morrow, with the initials "NM" added to the title. The Library notes that this label came from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the place it refers to remains uncertain. The negative is one of a large group made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, and it is dated to about 1924 from its neighbors in the collection. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the breakdown of its original coating over time.
