A statue of John Barry, the Irish-born captain often called the father of the American navy, is the subject here, shown at its unveiling-season observance on August 2, 1924. The occasion was the 185th anniversary of his birth, marked by the Sons of the Revolution, a patriotic society that held commemorations for Revolutionary-era figures. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's ceremonies and monuments in the 1910s and 1920s, made the picture on a glass negative. Streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the deterioration of its original coating, not from the scene itself.
