John Belt stands among armored mail trucks in this November 19, 1925, view, a detail that ties the picture to a period when the mail was increasingly carried by motor truck and guarded against robbery. The title comes from notes made by the National Photo Company and has not been verified, so Belt's role is not confirmed here. The company, a Washington, D.C. firm, left behind a large body of glass negatives, and this one came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of its original coating.
