This glass negative captures two of the best-known managers in 1920s baseball, Stanley Harris of the Washington Senators and John McGraw of the New York Giants, on October 4, 1924, around the opening of that year's World Series. Harris, a player-manager who was still in his twenties, faced the veteran McGraw, whose Giants had long been one of the sport's dominant teams, and the Senators went on to win the championship that fall. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio known for its newsworthy portraits of public figures, made the image. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
